Everywhere you go, everyone on the Internet with an agenda talks about traffic. How to generate it. How to attract it. How to get it cheaper. How to build it faster.
What few are talking about, though, is WHAT KIND OF TRAFFIC? Do your visitors want what you have? Are they hungry? Are they in a BUYING MOOD? These are questions you absolutely MUST ask when considering how to generate traffic. Most people dont bother.
So how do you get good at targeting? Its not easy. Thats where the big marketers are silent. It takes WORK to learn targeting. Two key tactics will take you a very long ways towards more targeted prospects.
The first is research. Of course, I am talking about keyword research. If you do not know WordTracker from a bloodhound, its time for some homework. If you are unfamiliar with the wonderful array of search engine research tools out there, crack those fingers a few times and fire up your favorite search engine. Its back to school for you.
Dont overlook the other kind of research, either. No matter what sort of product or service you offer, you have competition. Learn who they are. There are research and spying techniques that can shave YEARS off your growth curve if you discover and deploy them.
The second technique is testing. This has to be the most overlooked of all online marketing skills. Because it's a bit boring. You have to put your accountant hat on for this one. Who wants to do that? Hey, chin up and tough it out. You want that private island, right? Split-testing, visitor testing, polls, customer e-mail surveys, feedback mechanisms. Learn them. Use them. And watch your conversion rates soar!
They are thinking quantity. If I throw enough mud against the wall, some of it will stick, right? Wrong! It takes far too much work to get visitors to come by in the first place not to pay attention to this crucial principle: targeting.
